Comment: Hero Smith and captain Paine fine just the way they are | peter_fitz

Even amid the current euphoria over the Ashes victory – RAH! – there is a kerfuffle over who should be the next captain of the Australian Test side. It focuses on whether or not Steve Smith should succeed his successor, Tim Paine.

Thirdly, Paine should keep the job as long as he is able! He was brought in specifically to change the culture and clean the whole thing up. He has not only done that, but also guided the Test team to victory in the Ashes in England. And yes, there are those who say Paine’s performance is not strong enough to hold his place in the team, focusing on his lack of big scores. But reader Dennis Lynch has blown away the very idea.

Livingstone, not surprisingly, is more than happy about it, pointing out that while it is a statue of Harris, it is not honouring her alone but the breakthrough by women in finally storming the ramparts of AFL as a male-only bastion.

A pretty good haul, for a fairly short stint of just over two years. In the words of a rugby league mate who follows it closely: “Apart from a few gaffes on social media, he actually got shit done.”“I didn't enjoy watching last week, but what a feeling today ... I love batting, don’t really like watching cricket.”

I think sporting psychologists will in the future refer to the “Paine syndrome, “A captain who leads through other people’s example”. History records it was originally observed in MikeBrearley in the early 1980s, but clincially diagnosed 40 years later

Success is very much the exception rather than the rule, unless you're Steve SmithSteve Smith has spent nearly 31 hours batting this series, facing 1,143 balls and averages 125 to put him on a par with the game's greatest. A fourth innings hundred is the final frontier. Great assessment of a legend in the making. I could watch Smith at bat all day. It’s always the case that the best of anything is a joy to watch. I’m personally very proud of him. Only highlights the widening gulf between Smith and the rest in the current Test side, every side has one or two stand out players in any series but Smith is the stand out in both sides with no other players coming close.

Smith heroics keep Australia afloat once againSmith keeps Australia alive in the Fifth Test, just. 9WWOS Ashes terrible decision to bowl first - terrible batting display on a good wicket - some terrible fielding..... and now England are odds-on to win and we can say adios to Paine as captain and keeper...along with a few others. If his team mates could help him out that would be good. If he wants a threepeat of tons at the Oval then he’ll just have to do it in the second innings then...

Australia's rock Steve Smith holds firm, while the rest crumbleAnalysis: Australia's rock Steve Smith holds firm, while the rest crumble | gregbaum GregBaum Again... GregBaum IMO Smith is doing more than enough to rehabilitate himself. [Unless you're the nasty sort of person who refuses to believe in the necessity for forgiveness. There's a LOT of that sort around these days. Rancid fake Puritans.] GregBaum Sick of it. Embarrassed to be retaining the ashes on the back of these performances. Warner....worst opener I’ve seen in a series.
