Analysis: Australia's rock Steve Smith holds firm, while the rest crumble | gregbaum

Here’s some stats to go on with while you’re waiting for Smith. He made nearly as many as the hapless David Warner has for the series, and in three fewer innings. He’s made as many in the series as England’s best two players combined. He’s made a third of all of Australia’s runs in the series, despite missing three innings. He’s top-scored in every innings he’s played, which is unprecedented. So many stones, one Gibraltar.

Back to the Oval. Back to Smith. He was dropped once, from a flying upper cut at Curran that squirmed out of Joe Root’s reach at slip. But you could hardly call him lucky: it was only the second time he had been dropped for the series. It was during a short lull in his innings, in which he also played and missed a couple of times. Well, he is human, partly. He said he had the flu this day, as if to explain why he took so long and made so few. We thought his only corporal weakness was for runs.

Smith had no issue with DRS, as others did, because had no need for recourse to it. It’s there for those who make mistakes. Smith thought he had made one, once, when England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow made as if he was about to take off the bails as Smith stretched and dived for a third. He wasn’t. The ball was nowhere near. Smith had been goosed. He laughed. It was a fake mistake.

GregBaum Sick of it. Embarrassed to be retaining the ashes on the back of these performances. Warner....worst opener I’ve seen in a series.

GregBaum IMO Smith is doing more than enough to rehabilitate himself. [Unless you're the nasty sort of person who refuses to believe in the necessity for forgiveness. There's a LOT of that sort around these days. Rancid fake Puritans.]

GregBaum Again...

Success is very much the exception rather than the rule, unless you're Steve SmithSteve Smith has spent nearly 31 hours batting this series, facing 1,143 balls and averages 125 to put him on a par with the game's greatest. A fourth innings hundred is the final frontier. Great assessment of a legend in the making. I could watch Smith at bat all day. It’s always the case that the best of anything is a joy to watch. I’m personally very proud of him. Only highlights the widening gulf between Smith and the rest in the current Test side, every side has one or two stand out players in any series but Smith is the stand out in both sides with no other players coming close.

Smith heroics keep Australia afloat once againSmith keeps Australia alive in the Fifth Test, just. 9WWOS Ashes terrible decision to bowl first - terrible batting display on a good wicket - some terrible fielding..... and now England are odds-on to win and we can say adios to Paine as captain and keeper...along with a few others. If his team mates could help him out that would be good. If he wants a threepeat of tons at the Oval then he’ll just have to do it in the second innings then...

Steve Smith's historic Ashes feat not enough to rescue AustraliaSteve Smith achieved a feat that eluded even Don Bradman but it was not enough to rescue Australia after another substandard batting performance. Once a cheat.... he's great -- the rest of the batsmen are bloody awful and should never tour England again Apart from Smith and Labuschagne, our batting lineup is horrendous. The worst I’ve seen in a long long time. These guys have absolutely no idea how to score. Warner....are you serious? It’s a wonder how we retained these ashes.
