'The birthday gift I can't use': Why Amar wants helmet, hard hat exemption for Sikhs | canberracamper

Amar Singh calls it "the birthday gift I can't use". Last month, his wife gave him a vintage Jawa motorcycle for his 38th birthday. Despite his love of motorbikes, Singh is not able to take his present for a ride on the road.

Sikhs have lived in Australia since the early 1800s and make up 0.5 per cent of the Australian population, according to the 2016 census.

CanberraCamper Send them back to where they came from...lol...back to where they know they belong...

CanberraCamper If you want to live here you comply with our laws. No exceptions.

CanberraCamper Give him an exemption if he waives any TAC compensation or death insurance payout for his family if he has an accident

CanberraCamper bugger off back to India if you need that

CanberraCamper Don’t cave like Canada did!

CanberraCamper Lots of bikies have long hair. The turban isn't religious, the uncut hair is. Plait it, wear it long and wear a helmet.

CanberraCamper Yes, anyone with common sense would see their head covering is a good as wearing a helmet. Not so, we are ruled by groups of morons.

CanberraCamper One law for all no exception

CanberraCamper Simple answer; don’t wear a helmet and you aren’t covered for any insurance

CanberraCamper 1. Helmets have proven protective value 2. Turbans have no protective value 3. Sikh men have many accepted ways of covering their hair with a cloth, including some quite low profile versions 4. I’m sure they could find a way of fitting hair and cloth into an extra large helmet.

CanberraCamper Just go ahead and ride. Lots of Sikhs ride bicycles without a helmet in Australia and get away with it. Fair enough, the cops won’t do anything.

CanberraCamper They have that in Canada. And exemptions if they want to join the police. Giving people special treatment is a bad idea.

CanberraCamper Oh FFS

CanberraCamper Let people take charge of themselves but also be responsible for self if things go wrong. If you break your head, despite advice, you reap the consequences&don't blame others. About time nanny state left everyone alone. Let people think for themselves but also take the consequences.

CanberraCamper I'm sure there is someone out there who could take this opportunity to develop a helmet that would adhere to law and safety standards while accommodating the turban.

CanberraCamper Hahahahahahahahaha omg, you fucking serious. Lol. No. Just no.
