Victoria’s State Emergency Service said it received 870 requests for assistance in the 12 hours to 7.30pm on Monday. Of those calls for help, 741concerned downed trees, with the busiest SES units at Warragul, Hastings, Whitehorse, Maroondah and Whittles...

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded gusts of 90km/h to 100km/h across the southern and central parts of the state, with winds reaching 98km/h at Essendon Airport and Ben Nevis, near Ararat.

It comes as snow is expected on some of the state’s peaks and as the summer fire danger period starts in the north-west. Meanwhile, with the first day of summer only nine days away, the Country Fire Authority warned Mildura Rural City Council residents theirbegan on Monday. No other Victorian areas have been issued with fire danger restrictions yet.

The SES advised that if the weather turned foul, it was best for motorists to avoid driving and to pull over away from trees, drains and low-lying areas to avoid danger. She said it was possible “even small amounts of rain” would have an impact in areas hit by floods this spring.CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan said it was “quite ironic and bizarre” that we were talking about the fire season amid storms, rain and devastating flood events.
