Local Government Minister Wendy Tuckerman has called on all politicians to be transparent with how they spend public money as allegations escalate around Canterbury Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour | natassiazc

that 10 Canterbury Bankstown councillors and four council staff went on a tour of North America in 2019, while Asfour was mayor, and claimed in a media release they would pay their own travel costs.Credit:Expense records for the trip showed it cost ratepayers almost $146,000. The Office of Local Government asked the council to consider clarifying its press release and said it “does not appear to have fully complied” with a clause of its own expenses policy.

Tuckerman said her expectations were the same as that of the community. “No matter what level of government, local, state or federal, we rightly expect transparency and accountability for how public money is spent,” she said. But at a press conference last week Minns agreed Asfour maintained his full confidence as a Labor candidate for the state’s upper house.“The fact that there is an inquiry or an investigation isn’t grounds to pull support for a candidate or an MP or a prospective candidate for public office in NSW,” Minns said last Wednesday.
