United’s 3-2 win over Western Sydney put them back on top of the table, but it was overshadowed by the magic Ben Garuccio produced out of nowhere.

Four years ago, Riley McGree’s jaw-dropping, “scorpion-kick” goal put the A-League on highlight reels around the world. On Sunday, Ben Garuccio delivered his own interpretation of that famous moment with a strike that will almost certainly win him goal-of-the-season honours.

Having not scored an A-League goal for four years, this was Garuccio’s second of the match, and it’s unlikely he’ll ever score a better one in his life. Prijovic opened the scoring in the 27th minute, latching onto a long ball from Tomoki Imai and brilliantly poking it over a stranded Margush from the top of the box.Garuccio made it two for United with the final action of the first half, but the Wanderers came out firing after the break, with a triple-sub from coach Mark Rudan injecting fresh impetus into his team.Getty

The result, their third loss in four games, won’t please Rudan, but he can take some solace from their refusal to lie down, while United turned in another professional performance at AAMI Park to continue their solid campaign under John Aloisi.
