Experts warn against complacency as childhood vaccination rate slows

The number of Victorian primary-aged children getting vaccinated has plummeted as experts warn the less harmful Omicron wave may have fuelled parents’ complacency.

“People are less worried about acute illness in little children and I guess most of us would still argue that no infection is still better than being infected,” said Catherine Bennett, Deakin University chair in epidemiology. “We don’t want to be in the situation where a more evasive variant pops up and we only have half of children vaccinated. It’s also an insurance policy for children in the future.”

About 20 per cent of Victoria’s 47,000 active cases are among children aged between zero and nine, and 22 per cent among those aged between 10 and 19, according to the latest figures. The head of the COVID-19 vaccination taskforce, Lieutenant-General John Frewen, conceded there was “some complacency coming in” for the children’s program and boosters.

There’s also a fear that vaccinating now will mean the coverage will have waned by Winter. Maybe forcing parents into three shots in less than 6 months was a mistake. As many experts warned it would be.

It is a 8 week gap between 2 doses.. has anyone calculated that in the mix of the data between Jan n now... if there aren't many 5-11 yr olds eligible, then yes the nos are going to be lower in Feb, b4 they pickup again in March - 2 dose

Whatever happened to herd immunity at 80% We're now at 95% vaccination rate, yet record cases and deaths. What good is the vaccine if the higher vaccination rate, the higher the death rate 'Complacency' is having too much trust on vaccines over natural immunity.
