Central West communities, hours out of a week-long lockdown and with no new cases, are hearing that virus fragments are being detected in local sewage.

Only hours after three communities in Central West New South Wales came out of a week-long lockdown, fragments of COVID-19 were identified in sewage, sparking a fresh wave of concern. The Local Health District says it could mean a local resident has the virus, or it may have come from a traveller passing throughThe Western Local Health District said sampling was carried out at Molong near Orange in the Central West on Monday and a positive result came back yesterday morning.

The local man visited five locations in Orange while he was believed to be unknowingly infectious, leading authorities to put the three local government areas — Orange, Blayney and Cabonne — into a snap, seven-day hard lockdown due to the risk of community transmission.More than 11,500 tests were conducted across the three LGAs over the week and no other cases have been identified since the initial positive test.

"This is the real time for us to be aware that we could have someone in Molong — or someone who's travelled through Molong — with COVID-19," Mr McLachlan said. Only days after it was packed down, the drive-through testing clinic at the Molong railway station has been resurrected.A drive-through testing clinic was reopened at the Old Railway Station in Molong on Thursday, only days after it was packed down after traces of the virus were found in sewage. The news is a blow to the local community and surrounding areas, which reported no further positive cases during the week-long shutdown. He said the risk factor changed every day with the Delta variant.
