Firefighters are preparing for another day of dangerous fire conditions as dry and windy weather sweeps across parts of NSW, Qld and SA.

Firefighters in New South Wales are preparing for another day of tough conditions as dry and windy weather sweeps across parts of the state. Sydney residents woke to a thick smoke haze across the city on Tuesday as a result of an out-of-control blaze burning in the Hawkesbury region. The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment warned the elderly and residents with respiratory conditions to stay indoors.

The Rural Fire Service said fire danger ratings would be in place on Tuesday for the Greater Sydney, Greater Hunter, Illawarra, Central Ranges and Southern Ranges regions. In Queensland, a severe heatwave is expected to test firefighters with temperatures forecast to soar up to 40 degrees for much of the states' south east. The fire danger rating will be raised from 'high' to 'very high' until at least Thursday as 70 fires continue to burn across the state.
