South Australian shipyard workers are no closer to an answer on whether their jobs are safe as the federal government considers splitting a submarine maintenance contract.
“It’s not a small decision, it’s not one to be made rashly, and it’s not one that will be decided on politics or parochialism. It’ll be made on the capabilities and the needs of that program.”The AdvertiserCentre Alliance Senator Rex Patrick said last week if the jobs were shifted to Western Australia, it would be “much harder” for the government to make deals with himself and colleague Stirling Griff.
Senator Patrick added the proposal “made absolutely no sense,” and urged the government to provide clarity to workers before Christmas.
“The splitting of the contract would be unworkable and would not be in the interest of the capability of the sustainment project,” the spokesperson said.
