Opinion: A worrying number of Australians have turned to day trading the sharemarket during COVID-19. The trouble is, they aren’t good at it, and they are losing money

One only needs to see the COVID-19 carnage experienced by professional investors to understand that amateurs stand little chance.

"For retail investors to attempt the same is particularly dangerous, and likely to lead to heavy losses – losses that could not happen at a worse time for many families." ASIC uses its database on retail trading to show clear evidence of why amateur traders should heed the old adage 'don’t try this at home'.

That in itself is not a problem because over the longer term prices could change. The trouble is during the pandemic the average time retail investors were holding stocks has fallen to one day or less. The risks of amateur investing are amplified by the fact that many punters are not confining their plays to vanilla shares, but dabbling in higher risk products that are highly technical in nature.

Fo every losing trade there is a winning one, ultimatel, unless market never recovers. Thats not what history tells us.

Professional investors use both quantitative and qualitative methods when compiling portfolios of stocks, as well as considering sector, macro, concentration and human risk etc etc. You can’t do this for very short term gain; u may get lucky but you’re playing with fire!

Michael Jordan's legacy and reputation unpacked in The Last Dance: Episodes 5 and 6 - ABC NewsMichael Jordan is remembered as the greatest basketball player ever, but memories of his time in the sun often don't extend beyond the hardwood and when they do, it's not always pretty. By “sketchier”, you mean a millionaire a thousand times over who loves to gamble? Please. TheLastDance Sketchy? Hardly. He liked to gamble now and then, that’s it. All that scrutiny and attention and I’d want to blow off some steam too. Like they say in the documentary- he didn’t break any law, and the only thing he violated were people’s sky-high expectations of him. This series is absolute trash, there's been no juicy stuff, boring as bat shit.
