The Pineapple Express’ edgy, often offensive memes developed a cult following among veterans. The top brass at Defence wasn’t laughing.

Veterans’ social media “community” Pineapple Express has hardly showcased the best of Australia’s military culture over the years. Publishing the phone number of war crimes whistleblowerSo it’s not surprising that the military top brass and the Defence department, both frequent targets of the Pineapples’ attempts at humour on Facebook and Instagram, want the group out of their lives.

“It’s fantastic to see the Pineapple Express down across Facebook and Instagram,” an excited social media contractor wrote to Facebook.“We know that there is still plenty of work to be done and hope to have the majority of the main offenders reported.”The joy was short-lived. Pineapple Express resurfaced within a week.

But two years on, despite the department’s best efforts, it’s still out there cranking out content to an audience of more than 100,000 Facebook and Instagram followers.
