Australia Medical Association President Dr Tony Bartone says a Melbourne GP diagnosed with COVID-19, who treated patients while infected with the disease, deserves an apology from the Victorian Health Minister, Jenny Mikakos.

Ms Mikakos said she was “flabbergasted" the doctor returned to work following a trip to the US, despite having a cold-like symptoms. Doctor Chris Higgins – who is also the father of Australian singer Missy Higgins – had treated at least 70 patients before diagnosis. "It's important we put this into context," Mr Bartone said. "Upon returning he had symptoms consistent with a mild cold ...

at the time that he returned from Australia the guidelines had not required him to be tested". "The doctor acted within good faith and informed clinical judgement to make sure that he didn't expose or didn't cause any undue risk to those patients that he was treating," he said. "It's clearly very unfortunate and disappointing that the minister felt fit to make the comments that she did yesterday".

Citizens who get infected by the doctor deserve an apology and explanation by the doctor more like as to why he put his needs above the safety of the elderly. For what? Because he is a contractor wanting to make his 300k a year+. Fucking greedy doctors

Tony Bartone you are extremely irresponsible to back this GP. He should be the one apologising as he was careless to consult after feeling unwell returning from OS. Has he been living under a rock to not know what is happening around the world.

IstandwithyouDrHiggins that's that! amapresident ama_media and to all the shallow judgmental tweeps here, I assume you're not really understanding the situation, so shut it, educate yourself and stop hating on the GP. He's owed an apology by JennyMikakos

Given the enormous (over the top) publicity given to this virus it is extraordinary that a doctor should go to work with a ‘cold’. At the very least a suspension and an apology to his patients. It’s interesting how people who are supposedly smart can be so dumb.

🖕🏾 AMA President 🖕🏾

The AMA has as much credibility as BoM.

An immediate removal from service would be more applicable...Might teach him to be more mindful of his patients wellbeing rather than his own hip pocket..

I don't think so

The doctor should be suspended indefinitely.

The doctor should have his license to operate taken away.

GPs 'underprepared' amid coronavirus outbreak | Sky News AustraliaPerth General Practitioner Dr Brett Montgomery says GPs are feeling “underprepared” during the current coronavirus outbreak “because they don’t have personal protective equipment they need in order to safely see such patients”.\n\nDr Montgomery told Sky News he was “concerned” by WA Health Minister Roger Cook’s reported “comments that GPs who felt unable to see patients who were presenting worries about coronavirus”.\n\n“That in doing so, such GPs were breaching their legal and moral duties… They want to see their patients, but they also want to protect the wellness of patients in their waiting room, and their staff, and their families,” he said. \n\n“State governments are responsible for hospitals, federal governments are responsible for general practice and we’ve seen very little provision of personal protective equipment from the federal government. \n\n“General practices don’t prepare for global pandemics, we usually buy the gear we need to do our usual job.”\n\nImage: Getty\n Is he talking all GP's? I would have thought if a GP can not keep their patients safe then they should not be seeing patients. If all Australian GP's are not getting protective equipment then we have a major problem, is that the case?
