Nextdoor Australia's Country Manager Jennie Sager says “research has shown over the last year that Australia is in the middle of what is called a loneliness epidemic where one in four Australians say they are lonely at least three days a week”. Ms Sager told Sky News “it is really important to point out that there’s a difference in being alone and being lonely” as “you can choose to be alone but being lonely is totally different and not by choice”.

“It is actually being compared to smoking about 15 cigarettes a day and how bad that impact is on your personal health… if you can build strong, social relationships, that can increase your health and wellbeing by more than 50 per cent,” she said. “Nextdoor is an online platform that is all about connecting you within your neighbourhood and surrounding neighbourhoods. “We have this unique opportunity to really combat social isolation and loneliness at a neighbourhood level.
