Police and rescue volunteers are continuing to search for a woman who went missing while swimming in Launceston's First Basin, with police saying her friends and family 'lost sight of her'.

The search for a missing swimmer at Launceston's Cataract Gorge is continuing after the young woman's friends and family "lost sight of her" yesterday afternoon.Police have asked people to avoid the area todayThe woman, aged in her 20s, was last seen swimming in the First Basin on Tuesday, when she reportedly became separated from her swimming companions.

"Police would like to advise that several resources will be tasked to the Cataract Gorge, First Basin throughout the day [on Wednesday] and ask that members of the public avoid the area while search efforts continue," Tasmania Police said in a statement.Acting Inspector Aleena Crack said the woman was with "friends and family and they've just lost sight of her".

A public notice printed in The Examiner newspaper said Hydro would release 35 cumecs of fast-flowing water and for people to "please check water conditions before getting in and ensure you're adequately prepared and experienced".
