The first milestone in the Federal Government's review of drone noise vindicates community complaints about noise levels.

The Federal Government's analysis of noise produced by controversial delivery drones has vindicated community complaints that the aircraft are loud and obtrusive.The Federal Government has found the drones exceed the noise standard for residential areas in CanberraDrone operator Wing has promised to make quieter aircraft

And it exceeds the 45-decibel daytime noise standard for residential areas in Canberra, the site of the world-first service. The sound was measured from 15 metres away, to mimic the experience of a delivery recipient's neighbour.

Drone? DRONE? I’ve seen one drone in Australia in five years and that’s the source of multiple noise complaints? Yet my arsehole neighbours can get outside at 6.30am with a lawnmower, whipper snipper and leaf blower and it’s perfectly fine and lawful? Get real.

The noise is actually due to how the power to the electric motors is controlled, using a technique called pulse width modulation. There are some tricky mathematics possible to reduce the harmonics caused by PWM but really they need to switch to something very different.

So are cars / vans...
