The consumer watchdog has reportedly asked Treasurer Josh Frydenberg to conduct another inquiry into the banks after a surge in complaints of consumers being treated unfairly.

The Competition and Consumer Commission is seeking a formal ­directive from Mr Frydenberg to examine the industry's competitiveness,

The Australian reports. A fresh inquiry could examine so called "catch and keep" tactics, which deter customers from switching banks.
