The Africa Report and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists have studied confidential data revealing the role played by Eswatini in the transit of money between Southern Africa and Dubai. According to the documents, these transactions could be linked to gold smuggling and money laundering.

, the video investigation produced by Al Jazeera last year on money laundering and gold trafficking in Zimbabwe, Canadian businessman Alistair Mathias boasts of moving gold valued at tens of millions of dollars every month with his Zimbabwean partner Ewan MacMillan, who has reportedly been implicated in several gold smuggling cases. In the same video investigation, Mathias boasts of his access to African heads of state.
