A photo of John Harmon , who recently spoke to KOMO News about a moment from 38 years ago, when volunteers from the USO NW Center at Sea-Tac airport helped him and his then 2-year-old daughter when passing through. But many people have no idea that it helps about five million military service members and their families every year. That help comes from volunteers who often make a lasting impression, like they did for John Harmon .
Harmon retired from the U.S. Coast Guard and was traveling back through Seattle on a personal mission.“One of my sons just got promoted to Sgt. First Class and he’s in the Washington National Guard, Army National Guard,” he beamed. With an 18-hour wait for his flight home, Harmon popped into the USO Northwest Center at Sea-Tac airport.
“They read my face when I walked in here. I was ragged,” Harmon said with a smile. He said those volunteers scooped up his daughter Kristi and told him to take a nap. So exhausted from flying from his post in Alaska to Seattle with a toddler, he said he slept for only three hours. He said that about one in every 10 people who walk through their doors are children served by volunteers of all ages.
