This Military Appreciation Month, KOMO News is celebrating the USO Northwest.

The line to check luggage stretched to the front desk on a recent Flight Night at the USO Northwest at Sea-Tac International Airport. Volunteers here, make sure service members have what they need before catching their flights to their new duty stations in East Asia. The United Service Organization first started in 1941 to provide morale and recreational services to members of the U.S. Military. The mission today remains the same despite the many changes in our society from President Franklin D.

“The volunteers here especially have been so helpful! Like my son, he’s so little he doesn’t understand what’s going on. I can’t remember her name, but she was so sweet. Oh, does he need a straw? They don’t have straw she went and found one,” Stang told KOMO News. “For a lot of the young men and women that are coming through here, this is the first time they're traveling, and their first duty station that they’re going to,” Vietnam veteran and USO Volunteer Raymond Cruz told KOMO News.

Spending all of that downtime at the USO away from the noise and crowds of the airport helps many decompress during what can be a very stressful, anxious time. The USO relies on donations to keep enough food and beverages on hand so nobody leaves hungry or thirsty.
