The UK has abolished the 5% rate of value-added-tax (VAT) on menstrual products, known as the tampon tax

It means that from January 1, period products will no longer be subject to VAT. The UK government said the change was made possible by the end of the Brexit transition period, and freedom from an EU law that mandates VAT on sanitary products. "I'm proud that we are today delivering on our promise to scrap the tampon tax," said UK finance minister Rishi Sunak, who committed to the change in his March budget.

"It's been a long road to reach this point, but at last the sexist tax that saw sanitary products classed as non-essential, luxury items can be consigned to the history books," Felicia Willow Chief Executive of the Fawcett Society, the UK's oldest charity campaigning for women's rights and gender equality. In November, Scotland became the first country in the world to allow free and universal access to menstrual products, including tampons and pads, in public facilities.

The U.S. is such a company that it more than likely would never do this

So ridiculous in the first place...health care for all or just men...

about fucking time

About time actually.

Abolish all vat

About damn time. I’m married to a woman here in the US and I pay a hefty tax every month too.

Abolish all tax on any Healthcare... that is a good start to tax reform!

We’re in the right direction

Why hasn't cnn reported in the two police officers that were shot in Alberta Canada?

This is news?

kasiva_mutisya DollyOgutu

Stupid bureaucratic EU tax and like mindless puppets the women of the EU will pay this tax.

Good things of brexit...🤣🤣. Brits really buy this BS.

Which they could have done in 2013, 2015 or 2019.

👏👏👏👏

1. Your article implies this is a post Brexit measure whereas the imposition of VAT is a matter for each individual EU country.Ireland levies no value-added tax on tampons, panty liners, and sanitary towels. In Germany, the amount of tax on sanitary items was cut from 19%) to 7%

Inadequate access to menstrual products is an under appreciated problem in the USA and abroad. ~ 1/3 of US population, 100,000,000 people, are women of reproductive age. End Period Poverty! womenshealth

Scotland on its own did it better 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Thank goodness. Better late than never.

Covid-19 vs THE HUNGER PANDEMIC. A must watch video.

How about we citizens start taxing the government for taxing us?🤣

Women shouldn't have to pay for these types of items. TP should be free to but TP makers cleaned up in the past months with all the hoarding everyone did.

They did something similar here but jacked up the price to cover the tax. Smh

'Bout time!!

Should never had been taxed.

And boo they did it in the first place. Imagine some woman on the precipice of ending her menstrual cycle not getting her tax money back for ..all those years. Must be exciting for her daughter.

Stop discrimination against men! Stop taxing beer! ✊🏻

Should be handed out to very needed females free of charge not just free of VAT?

Very commendable action. I hope/pray the day comes when menstrual pads will be given out free of charge as they do condoms. People who choose to have pleasure should not be helped. No girl chooses to menstruate.

All it took was a bunch of men to complain about it.

Tbh I bulk buy in Costco. Five pounds last like three months. But it is good that it has been abolished.

Can we apply this in the Philippines 🧐?

Unrelated: menstrual product brands in the UK decide to raise prices 5%.

Sense at very long last 🙄

Bleed free✊🏾

Are some men actually upset about this? Let's pretend only men got diarrhoea. That lasted several days. Every month. For 40 yrs of our lives. And women think we get too emotional. And on top of that, we're taxed to keep ourselves clean enough to carry on our lives as normal.

i'm so confused right now. you really called it tampon tax? 😭😭😂

Not the US would only do the same

That tax was bleeding them dry,

In the US if we lowered the tax on just tampons the tampon makers would raise their price by 5%. Cause that's how capitalism and greed work in the US. Common decency is gone.

They are FREE in Scotland! The Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Act. NicolaSturgeon . The UK govt voted AGAINST removing the TAX in 2015.

liberal men are thankful

I am not sure.

lauucora

Please can that happen worldwide, we need that on a monthly, & they’re expensive for no reason 😡

They should be free.

It’s not like we choose to go thru this every month! It’s expensive being a woman! There should be a tax cut for being female

There should be no taxes on these products anywhere

There was a tax on feminine products? So unfair!

Scotland made them free. Cheap bastards.

That’ll resurrect the British Empire!

This is BREAKING NEWS?

Whoa...positive news! 👊

The one they have been blocking for years. Some scam artists. 🤣🤣🤣

Who cares

Bleedin hell 🤔😳😂

Here's a guess - the manufacturers/shops will pocket the 5% - the consumer will pay the same.

Does that include incontinance products, serious qn.

They had a special tax on feminine products? Shame on them! 😡

Some ‘men’ in the U.S. are pushing for the same thing..

What do tampons and the U.K. government have in common?

What about VAT on gas and electricity?

How come the VAT was 5% when other products and services incur 20% VAT in the UK?
