Not only does Lorenzen fill a much-needed pitching role for the Rangers, he does it while being cost-effective.

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Michael Lorenzen celebrated after the Phillies won a baseball game against the New York Mets on Sept. 24, 2023, in Philadelphia.as a trade deadline acquisition. Sure, his dive along the foul line to catch a bunt in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series was a galvanizing moment. Sure, he will always be remembered fondly by fans.But the Rangers’ real need this offseason was more utilitarian. They needed pitching, in general, not Montgomery.

The Rangers could possibly use a starter. Or at least starter insurance. They could definitely use another multi-inning reliever. Maybe even a guy who could start for the first half of the year and transition to the bullpen if, you know,
