With starting pitchers Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer and Tyler Mahle coming back from injury, the Rangers will need options on the mound.

Texas Rangers pitcher Jack Leiter delivers during the sixth inning of a spring training game against the Kansas City Royals at Surprise Stadium on Friday, Feb. 23, 2024, in Surprise, Ariz. He’s got plenty of reason to. The 23-year-old former first-round pick is still in big league camp with thesaid that there weren’t enough innings for Owen White or Zak Kent, but Leiter was kept around to throw three on Friday.

That’s the good. The not-so-good came in the second inning when, after a Hunter Renfroe single, Michael Massey connected on a low Leiter curveball and lifted it over the fence in right field for a two-run home run. He rallied back with a scoreless third.Leiter did. He made an emphasis to say so a handful of times. But, the case-in-point of the whole thing is that he’s found ways to turn those not-so-good outcomes into positive learning experiences that may help him down the road.

Until then, the Rangers will continue to see what they’ve got with the former second-overall draft pick out of Vanderbilt. And, as long as he’s getting work, Leiter will continue to make his case in the only way he can. “I can’t control it, but what I can control is each day getting better,” Leiter said, “and doing what I can to — if it’s not out of camp, at some point — impact the team and do it at a high level. I know I’m capable of that, and I feel confident in my ability to throw wherever I start off. I feel good.”Shawn McFarland
