Privately operated internet platforms, such as YouTube, are free to censor content they don’t like, a federal appeals court in California on Wednesday ruled

A federal appeals court in California on Wednesday ruled that privately operated internet platforms are free to censor content they don’t like.

Though not unexpected, the unanimous decision by the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco marks the most emphatic rejection of the argument advanced in some conservative circles that YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and other giant tech platforms are bound by the First Amendment.

The First Amendment has long applied public squares, including in a “Company town.” This will be further challenged and, with technology being the epicenter of modern speech, it will have a significant impact. In other words, the First Amendment can apply to private actors.

These companies are using public infrastructure -- the people can ask the FCC to ban companies who promote censorship from using our public funded satellites, cable and phone systems.

Knot-Z's and Soviets liked Censorship too.

get case out of china

The First Amendment only binds the government, not private people or entities. This is well established.

no shit... the 1st amendment is a limit on the government, not the public. WTF how do so many people not know basic civics?

Don’t like it? Build your own!

This will have profound implications and will resonate with fake news platforms globally... brainfart and other similar poluting platforms are already doing it. Industry standards are needed quickly

then they should be liable for false statements made on that platform

These companies should absolutely be held accountable for everything that’s posted on “their” platform. It’s 100% their content now not yours. Theirtube

Maybe Capitalism creates a constitution of its own organically, despite the geography of it's base station. Brave New World!

Why I never use UBoob.

Are they also free to steal anything they like?

The *control* of freespeech disguised as *protection* through censorship to save our fragile mentalhealth? Beware the Hegelian Dialectic. .

Gotta go build my own WeTube then ... Yikes.

Restrict access or deny access to defend ourselves, limit/restrict/deny/our freedom to express ourselves. Gotta love all this freedom! What’s next persecution of churches and religious exemptions? (Or picking and choosing which ones are protected and which ones aren’t)? Merica

Does that mean they can be sued for defamation as well?

The idea that America has FreedomOfSpeech is a joke.

The answer is to break up the tech behemoths. YouTube needs a competitor. It's pretty frightening than only 3 or 4 corporations, like, control all this.

liebano 😅😂🤣 En “gustos” se rompen “géneros”

This is the right answer, am I die hard Trumper also. Govt does not belong in the decision making room for private companies. If we don’t like what these companies do we are free to bring our business elsewhere and/or create competitor outfits

Apenas um direito que está na constituição :) governo da asas pra depois ter aonde roubar ! Ou melhor saquear , estorquir , forma fácil de pedir 10 bilhões de dólares por multa e juros !!!

Appeals court in California. Not like we didn't see that one coming.

21st Century California Dream

Corporations, such as Google, are publicly-owned. That's why we sophisticated market people call them 'public corporations,' instead of 'private companies.' Corporatism OwnershipVsControl

Duh

How can they censor content and not be considered publishers? If you choose what content is on your site then you have to be responsible for what is on your site. You can’t play it both ways.

In that case they are acting as monopolies and should be broken up. You can’t have it both ways.

Free speech is dead.

Interesting So they are responsible for the contents the publish and can be sued for that I like it (just wait)

G-d told me about this perfect balance measurement. I dont know how you would eventry to demonstrate an example of making this experiment happen. I wonder if the curvature of the earth has to do with it. That's probably the reason why G-d was able and noone else. And the speed at

Someone needs to make a new platform if they are going to do this. To hell with being censored!

But a Christian couple had to bake a gay wedding cake in THEIR bakery? There's just something not consistent here...

We need Albert Einstein to figure this out. It is the perfect measurement. I wonder if gravity has anything to do with it. Oh my gosh. A new concept. I cant wait to ask somebody who thinks they're smart!

I learned a new concept today and its brilliant! When something balances on a needlepoint that has a base and the weight is perfectly proportioned on every side of the object and it balances perfectly it is a perfect measurement but how do you measure that? What is the equation?

1st amendment only prohibits the govt and not private entities or individuals from censoring speech (except in certain cases). Makes sense.

Appeal
