) is teaming up with the “Uber of tractors” in Africa and betting on a future where farmers summon machines with the touch of a button.
Deere is currently testing the technology - a small black box fitted beneath dashboards - on around 400 tractors in Ghana and Kenya. It told Reuters it plans to roll out the devices across Africa in the second half of this year, offering it to all contractors who buy its equipment on the continent. Held back by low incomes, tiny landholdings as well as a lack of bank financing, tractor numbers have long been stagnant on the continent, even as much of the developing world has experienced a boom in mechanization.
Such opportunities exist in markets across Africa, said Hello Tractor founder Jehiel Oliver, but companies like Deere have lacked the tools to develop them.
Do they know Uganda is a free country for business?
What happened to 'save the rainforests in Africa?' It was just last week
Mama Africa is the future.
But but but... we should all go electric and diesel is bad! Lol
Are these the tractors that the farmers can't repair themselves because of locked software or something?
In other words they are paying Deere for using the tractors while Deere collects data on their usage and pull together a better marketing plan to sell to farmers in Africa. Who’s really winning in that?
what? no. mechanization is bad for the soil. curses.
And....?
John Deere was 'green' before green was 'green' ! (nothing runs like a Deere)!
Bwahaha. What a terrible investment. Virtue signaling isn't good business, John Deere. My Massey Ferguson 35 is superior to anything you've built in the past 30 years and probably a more appropriate vehicle for Africa.
truly disgusting business practices
Better get payment upfront they rather kill the representatives than pay em
With all the bullshit Deere has been pushing recently, African farms probably don't want to deal with them just the same as American farmers. American farmers are literally buying used/refurbished machinery cuz the brand new ones are impossible to fix on the fly.
cool idea
shurufu JoeBavier JohnJackson1759 That’s gotta be the smartest thing you’ve ever come up with.
