LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The tears streamed down Shaquille O’Neal’s face when he reflected onboth a day after his death and nearly a month later at his memorial. Nearly seven months later after sharing his initial thoughts about Bryant on TNT, the tears have not fully dried.
O’Neal and Bryant frequently clashed as teammates with the Los Angeles Lakers for various reasons. O’Neal often became upset with Bryant for his high-volume shooting. Bryant often became up upset with O’Neal for work ethic and conditioning. Neither seemed shy about sharing their issues publicly. “There’s a myth that you have to be best friends to win championships. We only have to have one thing, and that’s respect,” O’Neal said. “If he goes to the hole with four people coming, he’s dropping it off to me. When I get double or triple teamed, I look for him first. He knows I need him. I’m damn sure he knows he needs me. I was just hurt I would never be able to tell him anything ever again.”In 2009, the duo shared the All-Star MVP and marveled at the chance to play together again.
“That turned out to be great. That’s how it always was. People thought we were fighting and bickering. It was more like a media thing,” O’Neal said. “Once we crossed the court and got into the lines, there was none of that.”
