The San Marcos Police Department released a video statement detailing the fatal officer-involved shooting of 22-year-old Malachi Williams , an unhoused man who allegedly threatened two people with knives. In the statement, the department said officers responded to a 911 call at 9:32 p.m., reporting that two victims had been threatened with knives by a suspect, later identified as Williams.
Police said when an officer located Williams at the same store and attempted to apprehend him, Williams refused to comply and moved toward the officer. The officer, aware that Williams was believed to be armed, backed out of the store and into the parking lot, where Williams fled on foot. During the nearly quarter-mile pursuit, the officer attempted to use a Taser twice but was unsuccessful. As Williams entered a parking lot where at least ten people were present, the officer fired his weapon, striking Williams.
SMPD said Williams was believed to be unhoused and living in San Marcos, and a records check showed no mental health services were received in Texas from any local mental health authority. The department stated that the use of force must be objectively reasonable and that deadly force may only be used to protect officers or others from an immediate threat of death or serious bodily injury, or to prevent the escape of a fleeing, violent person who poses a significant threat.Three investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.
