ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Protestors with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals were staged Saturday morning near the starting line of the Iditarod ceremonial start.
“We’re out here today protesting the Iditarod,” Michelle Sinnott, the Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement for PETA, said. “We will keep being out here until this race is over.” Sinnott, along with 10 other protestors, held signs and urged Iditarod leaders to stop the race and asked sponsors to pull funding. PETA staff said the race is inhumane and has resulted in the death, injury and illness of sled dogs.
“Last year’s winner was caught on camera dragging visibly exhausted dogs into a checkpoint,” Sinnott said. In past years, Iditarod leaders have said PETA’s words are allegations, fabrications, grossly inflammatory and highly inaccurate. The Iditarod has had, that the race has a good record of retaining sponsors and that 90 percent of their sponsors come back each year.“These dogs, are not super dogs, Sinnott said. “They’re not indestructible pieces of racing equipment. These dogs are just like any other dog. And all they want to do is enjoy life and in loving companionship.
