Graham Pauley's first MLB hit is a homer, and he got the ball back; Dylan Cease mixes it up in his 'OK' Padres debut; sight of Blake Snell brings cheers

Good morning, Right at the start, we have received a fantastic reminder of how long the baseball season is and how many ups and downs and twists there will be. The Padres resumed their season Thursday by doing against the Giants what they did in winning their second game in Seoul a week earlier against the Dodgers, playing sharply and aggressively and getting big hits. It heralded a new beginning for a team that had preached details and professed it would be better at situational hitting.

“I've got a curveball now that's kind of got some more sweep on it.” Cease’s first start with the Padres ended with him taking the loss after giving up three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out six in 4⅔ innings. “I felt like I was more inconsistent than I would like to be,” Cease said. “But it was OK.” Mike Shildt took exception to questions about a sequence that led to the Giants’ first two runs last night. Maybe he was right. Maybe this is looking too deeply into things.
