Two players who have never played above Double-A made the Padres’ roster for their season-opening series against the Dodgers. One of them was a given, the other had seemed increasingly probable. As has been evident practically since the first week of spring training, 20-year-old Jackson Merrill will start the season in the major leagues. Joining him as a first-time big-leaguer is infielder Graham Pauley.
The Padres also put pitchers Luis Patiño and Glenn Otto on the 15-day injured list and outfielder Tucupita Marcano on the 10-day IL. Merrill batted .372/.413/.581 in 40 plate appearances during the spring while making a smooth transition from shortstop to center field. Pauley batted .324/.405/.486 in 40 plate appearances. The roster for the two games here is different from what the Padres will carry when they resume the season next week.
