They have a high tendency to consume and a low tendency to save. Replace the federal income tax with a national consumption tax and this problem would be solved quickly. It would also increase investment and reduce or eliminate the trade deficit.

Could it be that they are finally working and haven’t had an opportunity to save for retirement yet?

And yet how many have the latest iPhone, tablet, computer or Tv? How many hit Starbucks 3 or more times a week? They need to make better choices.

My grandfather told me 60 yrs ago. Take 10% of what you make & put it in a savings account. 10% not much. Easy to do for anybody anywhere. If a person does not want to, they won't. It's that simple.

I did have some savings. Then I lost my job.

That means 75% have retirement savings. That's awesome made possible with jobs jobs jobs. Want more savings? Enough jobs to have two so you can get ahead.

If they’re not earning enough they can’t save. It’s one of the things that makes America great - for the rich

I wonder how that happened? I think it might have something to do with tax cuts for the wealthy. Union busting laid the foundation.

Saving is hard to do when you don't make enough money, paying extremely high rent, high utility cost, high food cost, and those are just the things you can't go without.. Millions are struggling, and in this country that shouldn't happen!!

racist discourse, the decline of democracy, bad foreign policy, the reduction of human factor in production, America will experience bad fate with China, poor quality employment, poor quality development.

Low wages for non college grads likely due to slightly too much, uncontrolled immigration over past 30+ years. Immigrant portion of workforce inc from 6% to 17%. Only small decrease in immigration should result in additional wage and benefit gains for non college grads

Not exactly true is it? Remember that there is Social Security. So there is retirement funds. Just not as much as people want.

It’s not the income, it’s the discretionary outflows that is preventing retirement savings.

What a joke! A 'booming' job market with wages and salaries so low that most families and/or single persons can not survive on.

It’s not how much you make, it’s how much you keep!!!!

The new math of saving for retirement may come down to this one, absurdly simple ruleA analysis of tens of millions of 401(k) outcomes found this is the optimum amount to save for retirement: It is simplier then 10%. You save as much as u can, u avoid having to have every gadget and adult toy available, and u only buy the shelter u need. This is not rocket science. For several years after I started my first job, I saved every other paycheck. What assumed forward ROR was used? What allocation/glidepath? Suggesting IF you start at 25 & IF you contribute 10% then you still have 30% chance to run out of money, with great margin of error, promotes financial advice rather than sway against it using a rule of thumb.
