Police say they need to know whether they're dealing with a mental health issue or drugs — or both — because it can make a difference in determining the best response. But officers say it's not always easy to tell.

doesn't make a difference 🔫🔫🔫

No, I don’t think so...Don’t try to impress us by how difficult ur job is, we already know....All you need to know is if a person is a threat...Deadly or not....Stop shooting people who aren’t threatening you...

It will often be both, and Meth can lead to something that is just like mental illness, but I don’t know that it can be treated.

Every situation is unique but should be approached in the same calm, cool, and OBSERVANT manner. Training (physical AND MENTAL) should be intensive & repeated enough to recognize how to deal with each. PROTECT & SERVE

What if I told you substance abuse IS a matter of mental health?

What are the response options? Will police be able to carry naloxone?

Cannabis induced pychosis is real

Meth + European American + Mental illness= get them help Heroin/Crack + African/Hispanic American + biased criminal justice system = lock them up.

Better late than never, but I wish they would’ve shown the same consideration for crack users. Unfortunately, many of them got strict jail sentences.

Hat's off to our police officers. I don't know how they do it.

Using meth and addiction in general are mental health issues.

so shoot first and figure it out later at the hospital or the morgue

I wasn't aware that it was against the law to look underneath a vehicle.

And as civilians, we need to know whether we're dealing with steroid rage, poor training, or just an ego-driven a$$hole. Or all three.

How about having common sense, respect, humanity and basic intelligence? Let's start with the basics.

But only for white people right otherwise their best response is to shoot first

IOW our plan is to shoot the meth head but get the mentally ill help, particularly if they happen to be black. Since it is so darn hard to tell the difference you had better cut us some damn slack when we just shoot the mental cases as well

Video game issue more likely

...it also seems to matter what color the issue happens to be -WAY too often...

It’s well documented of people telling cops of a persons mental difficulties, and it didn’t stop the police abuse or shooting the individual!

if driver has crack pipe in mouth , says he is ed sullivan ..... likes snoop snoopy dog and madonna .......

NEED to know?!? Just treat people as if they are sick/on something. Either way its 'mental'... getyourshittogetherpig

tell me about I'm still dealing with an assault with a deadly weapon in Harlem and it's been a fucking nightmare with the NYPD & last time I checked WADR they're not mental health experts & the entire incident was bat shit crazy & still playing out. TheMoreYouKNow JustSaying

Yeah, when dealing with meth users it’s very hard to discern, and even if the psychosis is just a result of prior use; nobody really realizes what a huge impact meth use has on the gay community, it needs to be discussed more eso w the youth

What difference does it make when they determine the best response is shooting someone?

Or they can just operate under the assumption that every person is worthy of dignity and attempt to help as opposed to arrest. People on drugs deserve respect and dignity as well.

how about err on the side of caution & don't shoot them in the face regardless of what your piggy gut tells you
