It's time to say hello to the box tree moth from Asia. The moth was first reported in Europe in 2007. Over a decade later in 2018, infestations were found in Canada. The pest spread and was later found in New York state and Michigan in 2022.
The Ohio Department of Agriculture issued a quarantine for six counties in Southwest Ohio, including Butler, Clermont, Hamilton, and Warren Counties. The quarantine specifically restricts the movement of boxwood shrubs out of the area. Box tree moths are capable of killing boxwoods due to their heavy feeding.
Young caterpillars commonly feed on only part of the leaf, either the top or bottom sides. As they grow larger, the caterpillars may eat the entire leaf, often leaving only the leaf's edges. If you spot these green and yellow caterpillars with white, yellow, and black stripes and black spots, take a picture and report it to the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
