“It was created years ago in response to the Columbine shooting on April 20, 1999,” explained Corporal Brad Penton. “It was adopted by the state of Alabama and required by every police officer by December 31, 2015. Since then, as January 1st of 2016, every law enforcement officer was trained in the academy in ALERRT.”
Corporal Penton emphasized the dynamic nature of such situations, acknowledging the potential trauma officers might face. “We try to teach them basic tactics that they can easily recall and help save their lives and also, more importantly the lives of the people we’re coming in to save,” said Corporal Penton.“They have to wear protective gear as in eyewear, throat protection and headwear because we’re firing a Glock 17T,” said Corporal Penton. “It’s a training pistol that’s specifically designed to fire simunition training rounds…it’s actually a plastic bullet with colored soap inside it.
