The Mobile Police Department is upgrading its virtual reality training for officers with the new Apex system, which allows for fully customizable scenarios in different locations and with different mental health issues. The upgraded training aims to improve officers' de-escalation techniques when responding to mental health calls.

Apex allows them to recreate situations that happen here in Mobile to go over what was done and what could have been done better.) -For over a year, the Mobile Police Department has used Axon virtual reality headsets to train officers in de-escalation techniques when responding to mental health calls . Soon officers will have access to an upgraded version that could take their training to the next level.

The new system is called Apex and it’s a fully customizable to include scenarios in different locations like an apartment complex, a park, and a hospital. Trainers can also choose different mental health issues. Officers can talk directly to the avatar and give it commands. A trainer can escalate or de-escalate the situation based on whether or not the officer is taking the appropriate steps. Apex also allows them to recreate situations that happen here in mobile to go over what was done and what could have been done better.

Corporal Nathaniel McCarty has already gone through the training, and he says it’s already made a difference.
