“They seem to me to be closer to theme parks than they are to movies,” Martin Scorsese says of Marvel's superhero movies.

“That’s the nature of modern film franchises: market-researched, audience-tested, vetted, modified, revetted and remodified until they’re ready for consumption.” That’s famed director Martin Scorsese, who penned a New York Times op-ed on Monday to explain his previous comments knocking Marvel’s superhero moves as “not cinema.”

“They seem to me to be closer to theme parks than they are to movies,” Scorsese wrote in the Times, doubling down on his claim that Marvel movies are not cinema. “It was about confronting the unexpected on the screen and in the life it dramatized and interpreted, and enlarging the sense of what was possible in the art form. And that was the key for us: it was an art form.”

“Many of the elements that define cinema as I know it are there in Marvel pictures. What’s not there is revelation, mystery or genuine emotional danger. Nothing is at risk,” he said. “The pictures are made to satisfy a specific set of demands, and they are designed as variations on a finite number of themes.”

I can’t critique them because I have zero interest in seeing them. I think Bob Igor is trying to sell books Good for Scorsese. No reason to soil his artistic genius with Iger's virtual theme-park crap.

Martin Scorsese Defends Marvel Remarks in N.Y. Times Opinion StoryThe 'Irishman' filmmaker decries franchise filmmaking as 'market-researched, audience-tested, vetted, modified, revetted and remodified until they’re ready for consumption.' Jesus, let it go already. It was just an opinion. He has the right to have one, and we have the right to have ours. At the end of the day, he's still a brilliant director and Marvel movies still exist. It's just that simple. Marvel films are still cinema - catering to a specific audience - movies come in many flavors and each film attracts different interests. God damn like let it die already we are not all going to like the same shit. That's just the way it goes.
