Op-Ed piece. In the lengthy article, Scorsese frames the phenomenally successful Marvel brand as an economic enemy of cinema and a threat to its artistic values.
“Some say that Hitchcock’s pictures had a sameness to them, and perhaps that’s true — Hitchcock himself wondered about it. But the sameness of today’s franchise pictures is something else again. Many of the elements that define cinema as I know it are there in Marvel pictures. What’s not there is revelation, mystery or genuine emotional danger. Nothing is at risk. The pictures are made to satisfy a specific set of demands, and they are designed as variations on a finite number of themes.
“Many franchise films are made by people of considerable talent and artistry. You can see it on the screen. The fact that the films themselves don’t interest me is a matter of personal taste and temperament. I know that if I were younger, if I’d come of age at a later time, I might have been excited by these pictures and maybe even wanted to make one myself.
“They are sequels in name but they are remakes in spirit, and everything in them is officially sanctioned because it can’t really be any other way. That’s the nature of modern film franchises: market-researched, audience-tested, vetted, modified, revetted and remodified until they’re ready for consumption. Another way of putting it would be that they are everything that the films of Paul Thomas Anderson or Claire Denis or Spike Lee or Ari Aster or Kathryn Bigelow or Wes Anderson are.
Cheap ass hollywood and their reboots killed 'cinema' long before Marvel started in on it.
That’s not what he said. Read the article. Whoever wrote this tweet should be fired
That’s not what he said though. That’s not a true headline.
Boycott 'The Irishman'; MARVEL FOREVER! AntManArmy
This type of journalism is why he needed to write that piece in the first place.
The sad thing... the triumph of Marvel has been earned. MarvelStudios movies didn't start earning $1 billion until The Avengers 2012. What these movies offered? good entertainment that rarely disappoints anyone. These are proper crowd-pleasers that fills cinemas. Downside?
eternal life is available thru Jesus , why miss out , worrying about the jelly bean sh=t
Me too, Marty.
So fraudulent & disingenuous to title this using his “sadness” quote out of context. You really need the clicks that bad? This is a very thoughtful, non combative educated article by one of the masters & you just shit all over it by just pissing people off who won’t even read it.
The man has an entire movie he's trying to promote, but you 'journalists' are like a dog with a bone on this topic. Asking the same damn question, then twisting the man's words at the other end. Shame on you. Used to have integrity that once upon a time.
I remember my grandfather saying the same about rap. Who cares?
Same TeamScorsese
kingteth And Film Journalism is Dead.
This is one of the most awful, clickbaity, and disingenuous headlines I've seen in a minute. No context here. Just meant to stoke angry fanboy fire.
johncampea I guess it isn’t over as you thought
ok. that's his opinion. Others have theirs. See? That's how it works. His is no more important than anyone's. He also filmed a scene where a man was sniffing cocaine out of a womans ass. I liked the scene. Just sayin'
The pendulum swings, just like this kooky country & world. Here’s to a resurgence of what Marty is missing, 🥂. Until then, it’s all very much
That’s not what he said. You completely misconstrued what he actually talked about in the op-Ed Shameless clickbait headline.
Ummm except that's what not exactly what he meant
Well, now we really know what Martin Scorsese feels about MCU. But journalists do not want to question the director's project? Will you just ask about the MCU? I wonder if the sites know the point of interviewing an important personality in the movie world.
trash headline, you guys are shameless
ok boomer
This shit don't make sense at all, stop talking dude.
How could anyone want this beautiful man sad?
