Letters to the Editor — Three cheers for the UT Dallas chess team, Mercury 7 team, Mavs

The UT Dallas chess team members take part in a pep rally ahead of competing in the 2024 President’s Cup, at University of Texas at Dallas. Although the team didn't come in first, it was the team's 19th appearance in the President's Cup.— Re: “One for the record books,” March 29 Metro & Business photo package.

The young people at the University of Texas at Dallas making it to the final four in college chess for the 19th time is remarkable. As remarkable is the makeup of the team. They come from India, Russia, Lithuania and the United States. What a wonderful world!— April 9 marks the 65th anniversary of seven men instantly becoming famous and known worldwide as the Mercury 7.

Grissom, Schirra, and Cooper flew in the follow-on Gemini Program. Sadly, Grissom perished in the Apollo 1 fire in 1967. In 1968, Schirra commanded Apollo 7, the redesigned and first manned Apollo. Shepard and Slayton had been grounded due to health issues but were ultimately cleared to fly, and in 1971 Shepard commanded Apollo 14, while Slayton flew on the Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975.The Mercury 7 were the first U.S.
