The leader of U.S. Customs and Border Protection was pressed on what the agency is doing to vet people seeking entry to the country at border checkpoints.

FILE - Concertina wire lines the banks of the Rio Grande on the Pecan farm of Hugo and Magali Urbina, near Eagle Pass, Texas, Monday, July 7, 2023. The leader of U.S. Customs and Border Protection was pressed on what the agency is doing to vet people seeking entry to the country at border checkpoints and how it would utilize additional funds to secure the southern border as lawmakers continue debating a budget for the current fiscal year.

Several lawmakers asked questions about the vetting process for encounters at the border, which comes with higher scrutiny after a string of high-profile crimes committed by people who were in the country illegally. There have also been concerns from some about foreign terrorists trying to gain access to the U.S. through the southern border amid conflicts overseas.

They have also increasingly turned attention to China, with the House Select Committee on China recently releasing a report that casts most of the blame on Chinese companies and its government enabling the crisis to grow. According to a report released last week, 97% of the fentanyl that enters the U.S. originates from precursor chemicals manufactured by Chinese companies.
