Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, left, attends a cabinet meeting at his official residence in Tokyo Tuesday, April 12, 2021. Japan’s government said Tuesday it has decided to start releasing massive amounts of radioactive water stored at the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant in two years after treatment. Suga told that the government adopted the release to sea as “most realistic” and that the disposal of the water is “unavoidable in order to achieve Fukushima's recovery.
The accumulating water has been stored in tanks at the Fukushima Daiichi plant since 2011, when a massive earthquake and tsunami damaged its reactors and their cooling water became contaminated and began leaking. The plant's storage capacity will be full late next year. The government stresses the safety of the water by calling it “treated" not"radioactive” even though radionuclides can only be reduced to disposable levels, not to zero. The amount of radioactive materials that would remain in the water is also still unknown.
Japan Fisheries Cooperatives chairman Hiroshi Kishi said the decision less than a week after he met with Suga “is absolutely unacceptable." Noting the government's pledge not to act without the fishing industry's understanding, Kishi said the decision “trampled on” all Japanese fisheries operators. In the decade since the tsunami disaster, water meant to cool the nuclear material has constantly escaped from the damaged primary containment vessels into the basements of the reactor buildings. To make up for the loss, more water has been pumped into the reactors to continue to cool the melted fuel. Water is also pumped out and treated, part of which is recycled as cooling water, and the remainder stored in 1,020 tanks now holding 1.25 million tons of radioactive water.
About 70% of the water in the tanks is contaminated beyond discharge limits but will be filtered again and diluted with seawater before it is released, the report says. According to a preliminary estimate, gradual releases of water will take nearly 40 years but will be completed before the plant is fully decommissioned.
If we are hearing this news now , how many litres have already escaped. Id say most of it
all they care is money, not the human beings. Shame on Japan
That means they’ve already began releasing it!
Morrison government should protect Australian people from nuclear water pollution!!!!
Y’all gotta wake up! If they announcing it that means they already doing it and we want feel the effects of it until 2 yrs.
Whelp here we go!!!
Alright, let’s check the situation in other countries.
The brain of the Japanese has been radiated by nuclear. The radioative water will threaten the health and survival of all mankind. Sooner or later, we human will receive feedback from nature...
Japan, you cannot dump $&! just because you can. You’re going to kill people and nature. You’ve been killing dolphins and whales without guilt. This should be treated as an act of war against the entire nations of the world!
Cool. I call dibs on Blinky!
Japan, you’ve already killed millions during WWII because of your fear of resources. Then you put nuclear energy all over because of your fear of resources again. You didn’t care of what might happen, & it happened. Why don’t you dump it in your land if it’s safe?
Now US support and EU quiet, imagine if China do this
We must take down Japan and build the whole of Japan into a nuclear waste landfill.
In the year 2025 all Californians will have three eyes and finally be able to drive.
😳
What is wrong with this country!?
They are crazy guys as they have always been.
Wonderful news...
China don't need to be transparent to certain countries unless they stop interfering China development. That's why china support internation organization But certain countries clique together for self interest.
Hmmm ABC News Treated RadioActive Waste ? ? Half life 100,000 + years ? So, have added cordial ?
Disposable of these radioactive reminants shld not affect fauna and flora. These toxic segiments affect greatly and bter way of offloading without endangering water specises
If nuclear water is safe as they said, why not use this water to irrigate Japanese rice fields?
I wonder if there's another way around this. RT : Japan's government has decided to start releasing treated radioactive water from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean in two years.
And? This is different from Tampa how?
Uh no this is wrong. They will kill wildlife and make our ocean poisoned.Find another way !
Western countries collectively acquiesce in Japan's approach!
Wonder why the Japanese don't dump the treated radioactive water in the sea where they hunt whales. It should be of great help to their 'research' 🐳
Do they not understand climate change? Do they want to kill the rest of us now.
I approve..
