My school did it right. I was in the free program 91-‘00 and never had to show anything. The lunch staff new me but I went to a small school with only a few hundred in my grad class. Simple solution, every has an ID/debit card. No one else knows how the cards are funded!

My high school had a program where if you didn’t have a lunch or money, you could get caf bucks at the office. You didn’t have to pay them back and a lot of kids were on a program where they got free lunch. There was also a breakfast program.

I grew up poor (much of my childhood on food stamps and welfare) and qualified for free lunches at school. Classmates already knew I was poor (hand-me-down clothes and school supplies, often tardy due to unreliable transportation, etc) so I tried not to make it more obvious. 1/
Perhaps they will learn that it is best to pay ones bills? At some point in time parents have to be held responsible for their actions. They should be the ones worried about their child being embarrassed just as much, if not more, than the public?

The weekly lunch ticket when I went to school was $1. If you didn't buy it for a week, you paid 25¢ for the day. There were kids whose parents 'paid' for the tickets by mail. We knew. We didn't talk and people were too proud to cheat that system 60 years ago.

Grew up on Long Island and my mom had lung cancer in 2000 and was unable to pay. I got the most disgusting cold pb and j I've ever eaten. Lunchlady also said I lied about the cancer but she was later proven wrong and ate crow.

So, in our school district which is over 90% free/ reduced lunch, the students who paid for lunch on credit would get shut out of lunch after too many weeks of non-payment. They would get a “side-dish”. It was so sad. This year, they all can get free lunch. What a relief!
Clearly I blame the parents. They are putting their kids in the situation. I’d like to see the budget of their parents. And if they are getting public assistance this is an absolute criminal offense to let the children deal with this.

When I was a senior in High School in South Africa, I couldn't afford the tux rental and fee for the prom. I was given a voucher for the tux and prom fee was waived. I had assumed I just wasn't going, and a teacher pulled me aside. They simply weren't gonna let me be left out.

This is what they did when I was in school. Except is wasn't jelly it was peanut butter. They also had a rule against sharing food, so a kid could get in trouble for accepting food from another student.

This is terrible - it undermines everything we're trying to teach kids about how they're entitled to free everything and that it's the government's job to steal money from those who have it & give it to those who don't.
