Ten years ago, an enterprise startup, Slack, grew into a massive business that changed how we all communicate — even outside work.

Most enterprise software is shitty. It’s clunky and unintuitive; the user interface is an afterthought. It seems obvious that the people who make these apps know that only a few people need to be convinced to make the purchase, and user interface matters a lot less than business-critical features. The average employee might hate the app, but that doesn’t matter. They’re going to use it anyway.

Slack tested out these products to see what didn’t work with them and discovered two things they could improve on: notifications and keeping a person’s place when they switched between mobile and desktop. That meant that even though Slack wasn’t doing head-to-head marketing — or indeed, any marketing at all — customers kept leaving other platforms and coming to Slack because it worked better.

Virginia lawmakers criticize State Department for not reimbursing nonprofit group aiding Afghan evacueesMembers of Virginia’s congressional delegation on Friday chastised the U.S. State Department for not reimbursing a nonprofit group that played a vital role in helping Afghan evacuees entering the state in droves in 2021. The nonprofit, Northern Virginia Emergency Response System (NVERS), provided aid for thousands of Afghans during a period of federal support lapse after the Taliban took control of Kabul. Despite repeated attempts to recoup nearly $700,000 in costs, the State Department has not paid NVERS.
