How Julia Turshen fosters queer domestic life, every Sunday on Zoom.

I look up from my cutting board to see dozens of faces in little Zoom squares all chopping onions. “Make sure you tuck your fingers in!” I say, always my first note when I’m teaching someone how to confidently use a knife.

With my screen on gallery view, looking at every person who’s joined me, I’m reminded that there’s no single way to be queer. Each week I’m welcoming total strangers into my home. Grace is often walking through the background to get a snack, or to wave at my mother-in-law, who often joins us from her home kitchen in Virginia. My parents always log on. My mom will hold up a piece of paper that reads “Preheat the oven!” . She and my father will chime in, adding color to my stories. Here, I welcome the crowd into mylife, to show them not just the food I love, but the place it comes from and the people I cook it for.
