Columnist John Baer considers Senate Democratic nominee John Fetterman's evolving health status and how that might play out on the campaign trail when he is able to get back on it.

John Baer is a longtime political columnist who worked for the Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News for 30 years before joining PennLive in 2019.Sean Simmers | ssimmers@pennlive.comBy now, despite muddled and mishandled reports of John Fetterman’s stroke and heart condition, there seems a clearer sense of his health issues – past, present and going forward.

To recap, the 52-year-old lieutenant governor suffered a stroke May 13. He was hospitalized in Lancaster. On May 15, he said his stroke was caused by a clot due to atrial fibrillation , but doctors “removed the clot, reversing the stroke,” and he was just being held for observation. Then Fetterman confessed to having been diagnosed with heart problems five years ago, and basically neglecting treatment. While he followed advice to lose weight and exercise , he didn’t maintain a medication regimen and didn’t see “any doctor for five years,” according to his physician.

Campaign senior advisor Rebecca Katz told me his physicians confirmed “no cardiac arrest and no aphasia.” Also, some will question, and the Oz campaign or its surrogates could push a narrative saying this whole episode goes to issues of judgment and transparency.
