DOTHAN, Ala. - The Houston County High School Beta Club has sights set on competing at a national convention.“We decided to set up a bake sale to help cover travel costs to get to Savannah this summer,” said Ashley Turner, the Senior Beta Sponsor at HCHS.“I was hopeful for around $50,” said Turner. “I made a Facebook post and was getting close from that.”
To rake in more cash, Ashley Turner challenged two of her brightest minds to find people willing to reach into their pockets and donate. “We really had no customers,” said Rylee Granger, a sophomore at HCHS. “Our first thought was to go to the local fire and police department and ask them.”They didn’t raise this money by word of mouth. They did it by auctioning off a homemade pound cake.“They kept coming back and they were like it’s up to 100, it’s up to 200, and 300,” said Turner. “I was getting excited.”
Both departments met in the middle, donating $500 each to help the students get closer to their goal. “I’m so proud to see them grow, that they are brave enough to get out there and talk to people,” said Turner. “I think they could sell grass to a farmer.”“We were so excited to inspire other kids to want to do something like this,” said Granger. “It means a lot to us. Most students don’t get to take trips due to how much money is involved. this money got us a hotel, and covered travel fees and we are so thankful.”and receive the latest local news and weather straight to your email every morning.
