'True grit, leadership were missing,' former sheriff Charlie Mendeke said.

Mendeke served as Uvalde County sheriff for 12 years. He left office on Dec. 31, 2020, before handing the reigns over to current sheriff Ruben Nolasco.“I made sure the patrol guys had rifle vests, helmets, long rifles and shotguns. You don’t retreat. You have to keep the shooter occupied,” Mendeke toldHe scrutinized the lack of leadership on scene the day of the massacre and said there is no such thing as a “command post” in an active-shooter situation.

“Once you hit the scene you are going in. I have no idea why other law enforcement did not take it away from Pete,” Mendeke told the paper. “They were yelling ‘get in there, please get in there.’ It sickens me to hear that. You are sworn to do the duty. True grit and leadership were missing.”as an elected Uvalde city council member less than a week after the Uvalde school massacre.

The way it works is, if a higher ranking or more experienced person shows up, and assumes command, but the sheriff must also be willing to pass command.

The Supreme Court ruling that suggests police in Uvalde won't face major consequencesA 2005 opinion by Justice Antonin Scalia could help law enforcement officials evade serious repercussions over their botched response to the Texas shooting. thereidout So much for the belief that one good person with a gun is all that is needed to stop a bad person with the gun if the people trained to stop the bad guys don't have to if they don't want to. thereidout And this is why we need the 2A police show up after events not at the onset. They are NOT your protectors they prevent nothing thereidout They shouldn't get anymore funding for their S.W.A.T team.
