Finger: For sports ‘disrupters,’ the bet is on changing fanhood

Former Hightower High School star Bryce Griggs is in his second season at Overtime Elite, a professional basketball league for young players.The XFL, in its third incarnation, isn’t trying to revolutionize football. It just wants to prove you don’t need tradition to make it work.

What all of these so-called “disrupter” leagues have in common is belief that many of the things we associate with fanhood — following one team year after year, from generation to generation; even watching an entire game, on TV or in person — don’t matter as much anymore. It’s no wonder, then, that an internet entrepreneur like Porter eventually would come up with an idea like Overtime Elite. The league, which was founded two years ago, was designed as a prep school, a hoops academy and an internet content factory all in one.

“At training camp … it was, ‘Where did you find this guy? Was he a bagger at H-E-B or working at the gas station?’” Popovich said. “It looks like he never played basketball before.”
