San Antonio Brahmas lean on powerful running backs Kalen Ballage, Jacques Patrick

Cincinnati Bengals running back Jacques Patrick runs with the ball during the second half of a preseason NFL football game against the Washington Football Team, Friday, Aug. 20, 2021, in Landover, Md. The Washington Football Team won 17-13. After Jacques Patrick was selected by San Antonio with the No. 3 overall pick in the offensive skill portion of the XFL Draft, the Brahmas’ philosophy became clear from his first conversation with the staff.

San Antonio’s 39 rushes were six more than any other team in the league, and the Brahmas were one of three units to run more than pass.Looking around the league at teams implementing spread offenses with four or five receivers, Ward saw an opportunity to operate a ground-based attack that would ease the burden on quarterback Jack Coan in his first professional starting role.

The Miami Dolphins selected Ballage in the fourth round of the 2018 draft, and the Arizona State product started to find a role late in his rookie year, highlighted by a 123-yard rushing game. He kept a rotational role with Miami in 2019 and with the New York Jets and Los Angeles Chargers in 2020 but played only sparingly with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021.

Though Ballage earned the starting nod in San Antonio, Patrick was voted captain by his teammates, with Ward pointing to Patrick’s daily commitment. Though he still measures at 8 percent body fat, Ballage said that he’s “all of 6-foot-3 now,” adding an inch or two through his early 20s. San Antonio averaged 3.4 yards per carry in the opener, and Ward said offensive line injuries created challenges. Starting left guard Willie Wright was placed on the reserve list this week due to an injury suffered Sunday, and right guard Norman Price has been held out of practice this week due to a knee injury.
