The Texans have plenty of needs as the NFL’s scouting combine begins this week. Brooks...

The stakes are high for Texans general manager Nick Caserio going into the scouting combine and the upcoming draft. The scouting combine could hardly hold more interest for the Texans. General manager Nick Caserio enters the annual evaluation event with his third head coach in three years, DeMeco Ryans, and knows the consequences of the upcoming draft could determine whether he remains in Houston beyond the third year of his six-year contract.

Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson could make Houston’s decision even more difficult by showcasing impressive workouts and interviews in Indy. Quarterback-heavy cycles historically drive up the draft-day trade market, and the Texans must decide how much they like these quarterbacks if, say, the Bears, happy with Justin Fields, trade their No. 1 overall pick to another team that picks Houston’s top choice.

If the Texans are happy with a Cooks-Metchie-Collins grouping, then they can shift focus to other position groups of need and add depth in later rounds or free agency. But it’s also likely the Texans trade Cooks after the new league year begins March 15, or that Caserio at the very least acts proactively by acquiring more receivers. The free-agent market’s shortage at the position warrants a higher, deeper look at the draft.

Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter and Alabama edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. should both solidify themselves as bona fide block destroyers during their Thursday workouts.Wouldn’t that be nice? Kittle, the 49ers’ All-Pro, was the NFL’s best tight end not named Travis Kelce. Kittle’s proficient blend of blocking and pass-catching is a perfect model for the Shanahan offense the Texans are expected to run.
