DOTHAN, Ala. -The Dothan DAV honored a special guest at their meeting on Thursday for his support of veterans.Cole is a 10-year-old whose love of toy soldiers has left its mark on the lives of many around the Wiregrass. He passes out toy soldiers to veterans and first responders. It’s his way of saying “thank you” for what they do.“It’s okay, but also I wish that they had more in stock in the stores so we could get more, for veterans and for me to play with,” Cole said.
While Cole may not fully understand the depth of this small token, his father, who is a retired veteran, knows all too well. ”What every one of us has lost in combat is our innocence,” said Sean Allen, who served in the Army for over 20 years said.”There was one couple that we ran into. Through conversation with his wife, he said that the day that Cole gave him that soldier, he was in a really dark place. Later down the road, in more conversation, we learned that this brought him out of that day. And that isn’t the only one,” Allen said.
Cole and his family sometimes encounter a few of the same people again all over the Wiregrass. The family says Sam’s Club is where they encounter the most veterans.“It makes a big difference. The little 20-cent solider or whatever they cost...it makes a difference,” Sean said. At the meeting, Cole got to lead the pledge of allegiance and received a token from former commander Daniel Blackman.and receive the latest local news and weather straight to your email every morning.
